Dear Working Preacher,

You are a child of God -- beloved, blessed, cherished, one of a kind, and God is doing great things through you. That's the truth -- so don't you forget it!

Okay, so two things about that sentence. First, I know you know that. After all, this is a huge part of our theological heritage as Christians -- that in Christ God has chosen each of us, set us apart, named and claimed us in Baptism to be God's own child forever. Yes, I know you know that...

... at least in theory. And that's the second thing. That while we know that we are God's children intellectually, I don't know how often we really revel in that element of our identity. Do you know what I mean? On the one hand, I'd wager that whatever else way may say about ourselves, the most important thing about us is that God loves us as only an incredibly adoring parent can love. On the other hand, though, this is incredibly easy to forget. Life, for most of us, is just so crazy busy that it's really hard to find the time to acknowledge, let alone reflect deeply on, the fact that God so loved us that God was willing to send God's own beloved child ... for us.

But it's more than that life's busy. It's also that most of us, day in and day out, don't feel like beloved children. Or maybe don't believe that we should be, could be, or really are. After all, all too often we speak and act in ways that aren't loving, that don't reflect God's love for us, and that wouldn't seem to invite God's love.

And yet God loves us anyway. That's the heart of the Gospel. Let John remind us: See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are! (1 Jn. 3:1a). Yes, God loves us that much. Not because of what we're done, or what we may do, but just because of who we are and, even more, because of who God is. More than that, God doesn't love the person we might be, the person we've promised to be, or the person we're trying to be. God loves us -- the real us: warts, scars, and all. It's an amazing confession.

But John's not done. Look at the next couple of sentences as well: The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. (3:1b-2). There's a lot packed into these few verses, of course, but I love the idea that there is something about our true identity -- the identity God has given us -- that is somewhat mysterious, even hidden. It's hidden from the world -- those who cannot see beyond our accomplishments or failures, our wealth or poverty, our abilities or disabilities, our physical appearance or limitations. No, our true identity is hidden, unavailable to most of the world but established by God's unconditional love and regard and therefore available to us.

Do you see what that means? No matter what you may have done, or had done to you, yet you are God's beloved child. No matter where you have been or where you may go, God will be with you. No matter what you may said, or have had said to you, yet God will keep you in God's heart now and forever.

Interestingly, our true identity is also something of a mystery to us. That is, we have no idea what God might do with us or through us. We only know that, in the end, all that we are and do will be caught into Christ and somehow the totality of who we are will look like him. That means, of course, that God is not done with us. That God has something in store for us -- big or little, hard or easy, yet God is at work to love the world through the unique person God has created each of us to be.

I had a colleague who once confessed that she had some pretty horrific things happen to her as a young woman. She said that one of the most helpful things a pastor said to her was that God would use her despitewhat happened to her. I looked at her for a moment and said I believed that God would also use her becauseof what happened to her. And the tears flowed.

She understood, you see, that I wasn't trying somehow to justify or explain her pain, just to recognize that God is big enough, good enough, to redeem our suffering and through it to work for the good of another just as God worked through Christ's suffering to redeem the world.

That's true of all of us. God honors, redeems, and works through the variety of experiences we have had and promises to use us to do something that perhaps no one else could. So perhaps you are called to care for a remarkably challenged -- and challenging -- child. Maybe you are called to teach kids no one else wants to teach, or to wait and watch with those who have no one else to wait and watch alongside them. Or maybe you've been called to be a friend to someone who most people find it difficult to befriend. Whatever it may be, God will take our characteristics and experiences, our strengths and limitations, our accomplishments and regrets, and somehow use all of them for the good of another.

To be honest, Working Preacher, I think this is what it means to be a saint -- to recognize that God has called us by name, chosen us before the founding of the world, and promised to do great things through us for the sake of all the other saints God loves so much. We might seem like unlikely characters for God to choose and use, but anyone who is even a little bit familiar with the biblical story can tell you that's pretty typical of this God. :)

And so maybe, on this All Saints Day, it's worth reminding both ourselves and our folks just how much God loves us. This is why we can face the loss of our loved ones we remember on this day -- because we know that God has loved and still loves each one of them and so has brought them over from this life through the gateway of death to new and abundant life with God and all the saints triumphant. And this is why we can go out into this week and world and face the challenges set before us -- because we know that God accompanies us into this week and world and promises to use us to accomplish God's will and by our very presence to sanctify this world God loves so much.

So let me say it again, Working Preacher: You are a child of God -- beloved, blessed, cherished, one of a kind, and God is doing great things through you. That's the truth -- so don't you forget it!

Next summer, the ELCIC will be hosting the National Youth Gathering in Saskatoon SK. Pastor Sean is the Alberta representative on the planning committee and will be attending the event. So... who wants to go?

Here are some details.

Date: August 16-19 (plus transportation time)
Location: TCU Place, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
We should be able to fundraise most of the money to go.
Likely we’ll join with some other groups for transportation (likely a bus, probably from Barrhead, probably not a one day trip to make the whole experience more fun... ROAD TRIP!)
A group would meet in September to plan who is going, how much we want to raise and how much we want to pay out of pocket, select some team leaders and get generally set up.
The group would meet throughout the year to bond as a group (almost like a ‘youth’ group)

Wednesday - Join the Anglicans at St. Catherine's for their annual stations of the cross at 7pm
Thursday - Seder Supper Potluck at the Lutheran Church. This means that we will experience the ancient Jewish meal of the Seder which is the basis for what becomes our Holy Communion meal
Friday has 2 events:
First: Stations of the Cross Walk at 1pm. Meet in front of the Catholic Church
Second: Our own good friday service.

A Meditation on Centering Prayer(Thomas Keating, Open Mind, Open Heart, p.136-137)

We begin our prayer by disposing our body. Let it be relaxed and calm, but inwardly alert.

The root of prayer is interior silence. We may think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words. But this is only one expression. Deep prayer is the laying aside of thoughts. It is the opening of mind and heart, body and feelings - our whole being - to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond words, thoughts, and emotions. We do not resist them or suppress them. We accept them as they are and go beyond them, not by effort, but by letting them all go by. We open our awareness to the Ultimate Mystery whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than choosing - closer than consciousness itself. The Ultimate Mystery is the ground in which our being is rooted, the Source from whom our life emerges at every moment.

We are totally present now with the whole of our being, in complete openness, in deep prayer. The past and future - time itself - are forgotten. We are here in the presence of the Ultimate Mystery. Like the air we breathe, this divine presence is all around us and within us, distinct from us, but never separate from us. We may sense this Presence drawing us from within, as if touching our spirit and embracing it, or carrying us beyond ourselves into pure awareness.

We surrender to the attraction of interior silence, tranquility, and peace. We do not try to feel anything, reflect about anything. Without effort, without trying, we sink into this Presence, letting everything else go. Let love alone speak: the simple desire to he one with the Presence, to forget self, and to rest in the Ultimate Mystery.

This Presence is immense, yet so humble; awe-inspiring, yet so gentle; limitless, yet so intimate, tender and personal. I know that I am known. Everything in my life is transparent in this Presence. It knows everything about me - all my weaknesses, brokenness, sinfulness - and still loves me infinitely. This Presence is healing, strengthening, refreshing - just by its Presence. It is nonjudgmental, self-giving, seeking no reward, boundless in compassion. It is like coming home to a place I should never have left, to an awareness that was somehow always there, but which I did not recognize. I cannot force this awareness, or bring it about. A door opens within me, but from the other side. I seem to have tasted before the mysterious sweetness of this enveloping, permeating Presence. It is both emptiness and fullness at once.

We wait patiently; in silence, openness, and quiet attentiveness; motionless within and without. We surrender to the attraction to be still, to he loved, just to be.

How shallow are all the things that upset and discourage me! I resolve to give up the desires that trigger my tormenting emotions. Having tasted true peace, I can let them all go by. Of course, I shall stumble and fall, for I know my weakness. But I will rise at once, for I know my goal. I know where my home is.

Ironies, Paradoxes, and Balance

We expect our congregations to be places of health and healing, an oasis in the midst of the demands and stresses of daily life. Yet some people experience great pain in their congregations, pain that robs them of the comfort their faith could give them. Burnout is one kind of pain that goes against the very promise of congregational life.
All systems that rely on the labor of individuals, if left to themselves, will encourage burnout. The workplace, nonprofit organizations, and congregations all have a tendency to push workers towards burnout because these systems have goals and leaders dedicated to meeting those goals. The people working within the system very easily become the means to an end, and that end is the accomplishment of goals. In a congregation, the goals are often lofty and energizing: rich and celebratory worship services, stimulating adult education, outreach to people who are poor and in need, care and concern for children and youth. The congregation has to keep a strong focus on its goals in order for the congregation as a whole to be healthy. Meeting those goals requires labor. The congregational system needs to get people working and keep them at it.
This is a tension, an irony that always exists in congregations. The need for hard work pushes congregation members towards diligent service, and that kind of service can take away the sense of refuge and rest that people need. The congregation that has the goal of bringing life and health to its members may also push people towards burnout because workers are needed.
The congregation as a system will tend to call people into service for the sake of duty, which unfortunately moves easily into workaholism. As individuals, we often begin serving with joy and appropriate love, and then something draws us into some form of compulsion. It takes effort on the part of leaders to keep priorities straight. Congregational leaders need to expend significant energy with deliberate intention in order to affirm the call to serve God with joy, from the heart, so that burnout will be less frequent.
We cannot create a faith community where all is joy and peace and rest. Some work needs to be accomplished in order for the community to exist. We cannot wait to enter into serving until our motives are completely healthy, and we cannot stop serving the moment we realize we have slid into compulsion. We are broken and flawed human beings. All we can do is try to do our best.
The congregation is a place where people expect to find life and health and healing. If a person or many people experience exhaustion, discouragement, and pain in the very place that promised to give life, then what does that say about our faith? Our values? God? I can only shake my head in the face of the irony that all too often the very place where we look for life and health, the very place where we expect to nurture and deepen a loving relationship with God, can cause so many to experience the exact opposite.
For some volunteers, their unpaid service is life-giving. For others, their serving is one more frantic commitment that keeps them rushing in the fast lane and robs them of the life and joy they might otherwise receive in their congregation. What makes the difference?
How can we recognize holy moments if we are moving so fast that life passes by us in a blur? How can we perceive God's presence in time if our highest priority is accomplishing things? The very place that provides refuge in the insane pace of our hurried daily life has to encourage its volunteers to keep moving and keep busy in order for the congregation to function. How can that be healthy?
Our congregations are full of people whose mornings and days and evenings are packed so full of activities that they often feel they do not have time to breathe. We need to help them learn to take the time to watch for holy moments. Some of our parishioners will experience those holy moments as they serve in the congregation. And some of them will be robbed of the ability to experience those holy moments because of the exhaustion caused by too much serving.
We have to hold in tension three truths:
1. Many of the people in many of our congregations are infected with the "hurry sickness" that is epidemic in Western culture in the 21st century. They need their congregations to be places of refuge where they can find rest and refreshment. They need their congregations to encourage them to find a healthier rhythm as they live in time, and they need encouragement to notice holy moments.
2. In order for congregations to be places of rest and refreshment, lots of things have to be done by lots of people. Congregations depend on volunteers in order to fulfill their holy purpose. So we simply cannot say that we want our congregations to be oases of peace where no one has to do anything productive, and everyone can experience rest and relaxation all the time. We need volunteers to enable the congregation to be what it is designed to be.
3. Some people will find joy, satisfaction, and meaning in their service in their congregation. They will experience holy moments as they serve. Their service will actually have aspects that are refreshing to them. Others will be pushed by their serving to a place that is not healthy or life-giving, and their negative experience will probably spill over into their life of faith outside the congregation as well.

Some burnout seems to be inevitable. One mark of a healthy congregation is that people are encouraged to rejoice that God can work in their lives in all situations, including burnout. Indeed, burnout can enable us to reshape our priorities and have a fresh start. We can learn valuable lessons from burnout that we would not learn anywhere else.

I learned a lot on this trip.

First, ethnic tensions in the United States are a lot different than in Canada.
Second, it's fun to tell Americans about the health care system that we have... eyes go wide, jaws drop... they can't believe how good we have it. (Note to self... keep health care awesome.)

I also learned about Mission Development. In the states there are many new church plants happening, as well as lots of alternative ways of being church are explored. In Canada, we have more "re-development" going on. This is to say that we are using our existing churches to do the same thing.

The challenge of using existing churches to re-imagine what God is doing is that studies show most churches are more willing to die than they are to make deep level change. So in some ways it's easier to let a church die, sell the building, and use the money to start something brand new. But this is not the case for small towns or for the Canadian context as new plants are not the common norm, and our churches have the ability to hang on longer than American churches. This of course means that the task of seeing the new things that God is calling us to do is more important than ever.

So... it's going to take time and conversation but it's time... Grace Lutheran Edson it is time to cast a vision...

Look for more information to be coming in the next few months as we cast a vision together... it's not about a top down decision... it's about the body of Christ (that's us) using the skills and talents it has to re-imagine it's place in this community and becoming what we need to be for that vision to happen.

Palliative and Hospice Care in Edson

I just finished a great phone call about palliative care in Edson.

At the hospital, we do have one bed available and through the chaplaincy and the hospital staff there is a great group of people willing to follow up with families and patience for end of life needs. But there are holes in the system and this is what the conversation was about... the potential for better services in Edson.

So I'm putting it out to the blogosphere... if anyone wants to be involved in the development of better hospice and palliative care in Edson, give me an email and I'll help you get connected. That was what was so great about the phone call... it was all about getting connected to better serve each other.

Lazy Criminals...

So... if you're going to break into a shed... finish the job!

Once again our shed experienced a break-in attempt... only this time they didn't get in.

For those who don't know, the upper lock was wrecked a month or so ago... and then we got the big lock on the bottom... and the good news is the lock is fine.

The bad news is... they wrecked the bracket and gave up... so now no one can get in.

It's Synod Convention time again.

It's an exciting time to be the church! Some people point out that every 500 years or so there seems to be a major shift in society. You can see it in the first great schism around 1000AD that lead to the Roman Catholic and Orthodox church being separated. Then there was the Reformation in the 1500's. So here we are once again, right on schedule, being a church that is reforming and in constant need of reform.

I guess it all comes down to Faith, Hope, and Love. Faith and Hope that God will continue to be faithful to us. Love that we continue to receive and share.

Visioning and being together on May 2nd

So, we've rescheduled our visioning meeting and Fred from Alberta Community Development will join us on May 2nd after lunch to help us to create a vision process within our community. This is going to take the place of our council meeting for that day and all are welcome to join as we learn how to be a community that continually sets visions and directions for itself.

Please note that the date has changed to May 2nd in the afternoon, but the content is the same as outlined in our March newsletter on page 3.

YOUTH ENCOUNTER COMES!!!

After an afternoon of visioning, we will also be welcoming "Rainbow of Promise" for a concert starting at 7pm at the church (May 2nd). There will be time before and after 7pm to talk to the band about their trip to India, and learn about the ministry that Youth Encounter is doing. Puppets, skits, songs and more so please put this on your schedule as something that you don't want to miss.

Friday – 1pm - Stations of the Cross Walk
Starts in front of the Hospital and ends at the Catholic Church.
The cross will lead the procession from station to station. People are invited to take turns helping to carry the cross. We will sing hymns as we process. The Passion Narrative of Good Friday will be read in the form of the stations of the cross, and mixed with prayers for the community.
Approx time will be 2 hours.

Saturday – 7pm - Easter Vigil
Hosted at the Anglican Church
The service includes strong signs, new fire in darkness, light spreading from the light of Christ, the water and Word of baptism, the first resurrection meal, powerful words from the great saving stories of Hebrew scriptures, and the first Easter gospel. We keep this wondrous night in the spirit of vigil, our lamps lit, awaiting Christ coming both now and at the end of time. Alleluia! Christ is risen! And Christ will come again,

Lent is not a Forty-Day Good Friday… or Ash Wednesday

When I was a kid, Jesus' blood was everywhere during Lent.

The Wednesday Lenten series' I remember best were those that impressed upon us over and over again the many ways we had continued to crucify Jesus. One year was the five-week trial of Jesus. Another year was the ongoing sparing of Jesus and Satan dressed in red and white turtlenecks. There were rough wood crosses in the chancel and cut nails to take home. Withholding of absolution. Sin, death, and the desert. Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. Rotten lump of maggot-fodder. Forty days of pretending. Pretending that we were a people without hope.

All of which might be helpful for Ash Wednesday or Good Friday but I've come to believe are not the best choice for Lent. As I got older, I was exposed to a more life-giving vision of Lent. The Lent of springtime, of a springtime of the spirit, of renewal, of adjustment, of turning, returning, and reorienting, of metanoia. A Lent not of paralysis but of action: fasting, prayer, and acts of love. A Lent of journeys, journeys along the life of faith, journeys to the baptismal font.

The renewed baptismal emphasis seen in the Lutheran Book of Worship and Evangelical Lutheran Worship has transformed the experience and understanding of Lent for many of us who grew up with Lutheran Book of Worship. A powerful new vision for Lent is as a journey to the font. This vision is modeled on earlier experiences of the Church and on the origins of Lenten celebrations, on forty days (or years) in the wilderness for purification, on forty days in the ark surrounded by water, on forty days of intensive preparation for Easter baptism candidates. Lent for me has been transformed.

The observation of Lent in a parish with an active practice of Easter baptism is beyond the scope of this essay, but let me lift that up as a goal. I have experienced the transformational power of this practice not only for the celebration of Lent but also for congregational life in general. The assembly can come to understand that its work throughout the year is to prepare candidates (adults) for Easter baptism. Congregational mission can come to include this metric: "If we have no candidates for Easter baptism, what have we been doing all year?"

The Year of Matthew (Cycle A) lectionary readings are especially powerful for this linking of Lent and Baptism. But the Lenten readings in every cycle include some water images that can take us to the baptismal font. For those us of us in parishes that aren't there yet, mine included, what else can we do to get there? Here are some suggestions:

In your Lenten planning:
Examine your baptismal space
Move the font to a different location – near the assembly
Keep water in the font
Get rid of the lid
Make the water visible – temporarily (for five weeks). Get a bigger bowl if necessary
Teach a baptism class for everyone
Look at the Ten Commandments and Creed – maybe a confirmation retread in a light-hearted and accessible way. The assembly will be relived to discover that they are all in the same boat – they don't remember what they think they were "supposed" to learn in eighth grade
Tell baptism stories
Preach with an eye to baptism themes (look for the water)
Develop an expectation for Easter baptisms and abstain from baptisms during Lent
Invite deeper prayer, returning to baptism and the font
Invite spiritual exercises and disciplines for forty days – fasting or adding disciplines, prayer, acts of love, charity, mercy; experiential prayer practices or groups
Plan to use a confession at the font, affirmation of baptism, and thanksgiving for baptism throughout the season, or prepare the assembly for renewed appreciation and celebration of these rites during Easter
Avoid using shame/guilt and tempting this season
Avoid a forty day exposure to bloody Jesus
Avoid preaching as if (pretending) the resurrection never happened
More specifically, consider midweek Lenten preaching series on baptism exclusively. This forty day discussion of baptism can develop a hunger for movement into this renewed vision. Each week might consider a different vision of baptism (and of baptismal fonts):

doorway-initiation-passage
tomb-dying/rising
womb-birth
tub-washing
spring-oasis-river

All this is to say that if Lent in your parish has been a forty-day Good Friday (or Ash Wednesday), or if these days seem sleepy or a drag, there are deep riches in associating Lent with baptism, sacramental exploration, and preparing the assembly to return to the font and affirm their commitment to their own baptismal covenants.

First LWF Relief Convoy Arrives in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; DWS Focuses on Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons and Long-term Development Work

PORT-AU-PRINCE (HAITI)/GENEVA 21 January 2010 (LWI) – The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) Department for World Service (DWS) plans to scale up operations and strengthen logistics capacity in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic following the arrival of the first DWS convoy with urgently needed relief supplies on January 20 in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. DWS Program Coordinator Rudelmar Bueno de Faria underlined the need to expand LWF/DWS response in order to address quickly and effectively the needs of the stricken population.

Reports from DWS country program staff in Haiti indicate that Wednesday's large aftershock of magnitude 6.1 had caused further destruction. Buildings that had already been damaged collapsed completely and more people have been injured. It is still unknown, however, whether the death toll has increased as aresult of the aftershock.

An ACT Alliance rapid support team has already arrived in the region and is providing assistance to partner organizations locally in assessing the extent of the damage and the support required. ACT Alliance is the world's largest alliance of churches and related humanitarian and development agencies. The support team is led by Elsa Moreno, LWF/DWS staff member in Geneva from 2006 to mid-2009.

In an interview just before leaving Denmark for Haiti, Moreno told Lutheran World Information (LWI) that in the days to come the ACT Alliance would focus on delivering as much assistance as possible to the population in Port-au-Prince, as well as around the city and in other areas devastated by the earthquake. Some of the towns include those closest to the epicenter, Leogane and Petit Goave. According to the United Nations, 80 to 90 percent of buildings in Leogane, 19km west of Port-au-Prince, were destroyed. Petit Goave, to the west of Leogane, was also badly hit.

Moreno and DWS collaborators in Haiti said that many people had fled Port-au-Prince and returned to their places of origin, putting a great deal of pressure on local communities to host them.

"The ACT Alliance will continuously try to assess the number of people going to those areas which are away from response of other agencies. The main work will focus on water, shelter and care for children," Moreno stated.

Moreno told LWI that two important components now needed to be put together-emergency response and long-term development. "Our response is not only focused on the immediate needs, but also to help people recover in the long-term and start the process for development," said Moreno, a native of Colombia.

A key task of the DWS country program in Haiti now will be bringing relief to people who have lost everything. DWS would aim to engage and focus attention on internally displaced persons (IDPs) given the department's expertise in camp management, indicated Bueno de Faria. International relief organizations currently estimate the number of IDPs to be as many as 600,000.

The program's main operational areas before the earthquake were in the Macaya zone in Grande Anse and Forêt des Pins, Bueno de Faria noted. "Our target population has always been small-scale farmers, disaster-affected communities and migrants. The LWF will continue focusing on sustainable livelihoods and environment, and food security and advocacy. We are working to continue supporting these communities."

Meanwhile, the LWF/DWS office in Geneva has sent two collaborators to Haiti to reinforce its team there. Mr Bobby Waddell, consultant for resource mobilization, has been sent as LWF/DWS emergency senior advisor for three weeks; Ms Sophia Gebreyes, program officer for Latin America and the Caribbean, will go to Haiti for a week to assess the situation and identify models for optimal coordination between Geneva and Haiti.

For Waddell, a major challenge lies especially in dealing with the reality of logistics and coordination on the ground. Gebreyes wants to "contribute to the emergency response in the crisis phase as well as help plan the early and long term recovery phases with our frontline staff." Next week another, larger LWF/DWS convoy will be sent to Haiti with more relief supplies.

In collaboration with other members of the ACT Alliance, DWS plans to set up comprehensive, long-term psychosocial counseling structures for frontline staff as quickly as possible. These collaborators are under tremendous emotional stress and are stretched to their psychological limit, Bueno de Faria noted. It is therefore crucial, he said, to offer them respite and professional accompaniment in dealing with their experiences and trauma.

DWS Director Eberhard Hitzler said he was "overwhelmed" by the solidarity of Lutheran churches all around the world. "Their prayers and financial contribution are a great support for our work in Haiti," he noted.

The fact that World Service staff members in Sudan donated to the relief effort is "another fantastic symbol of this solidarity," Hitzler commented. "This is the LWF at its best."

We live in a very busy world and our plates are very full. I was once told that the most radical thing a person could do now is go and sit and do nothing. Who would ever have thought that sitting and doing nothing would be radical? Well... we’re not actually planning to do nothing but, here is a question;

What if we got together for every Wednesday in the season of Epiphany? (That’s Jan. 6th to Feb. 10th.)

I want everyone to think of this time as a family meal... as if we were all part of one big congregational family that was invited to just come if they could make it, starting at 6pm with grace, and then no agenda. Will some people drop in and then rush off to hockey? Probably... Will some people go to the corner and talk for a few hours? Probably... Will we talk about the bible and Christ and the love that God has first given us? Probably... Will someone want to play a board game? Probably.... Will we laugh together as children play together? I certainly hope so...

What will it cost? To all and any who come the cost is nothing. Bring nothing. Be a part of the family. You can feel free to chip in some extra on Sunday to cover the cost.

Who can come? Anyone... we’re a family and family friends are also welcome. In fact, as our family represents the creator of the whole human family (who is generous to all and invites all in Christ), all will be welcome to come.

The point is... there is no agenda other than getting together and deepening our relationships with one another. By increasing our time together, we will generate new ideas on how to be a family together. We will grow in love for one another and discover common interests. We will function as a haven where you don’t have to do anything or be anything... just come, and eat and be with the family. We will grow in faith as we serve each other and discover another bit about what it is to be the body of Christ in our community.

Is it too radical to take time to just sit down and eat together? I guess we’ll know by the end of 6 meals as a family for the season of Epiphany. Hope to see you all out for a meal at the table.

If we are connected to such violence, then we can be part of the solution. As we reflect on the light of Christ entering the world, how can we see the light leading and guiding us to right this wrong?

Advent Vespers - 4 Tuesdays in Advent

All are welcome for our special Advent worship services.

All services will be at 8pm on Dec. 1, 8, 15, and 22nd.

"Advent (from the Latin word adventus, meaning "coming") is a season of the Christian church, the period of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus; in other words, the period immediately before Christmas" (Source: Wikipedia)

Service time will about half an hour. We will be using taize music mixed in with some Advent Hymns.

This reflective service will hopefully offer a sanctuary from the hectic pace that seems to overtake us all in the this pre-Christmas season.

What seems to have started as a simple mission trip has turned into a vocational calling. And now, she is raising 14 kids on her own. One day at a time...

I admire her courage to walk right into the heart of pain... where she is developing a spirituality of praise and thanks in the midst of the struggle and pain and death. She is so sure of the end of the story of life that she persists daily to give thanks to the God who will one day make all things right.
